A blanchisseuse (a washerwoman) tells this story from her point of view. She was a nanny to Cendrillon, and when Cendrillon’s mother died, her father remarried. He married a horrid woman who treated her like a servant girl. Cendrillon nanny uses a magic wand that her late mother left her, to turn her into a beautiful princess and turn animals and fruit into a horse and carriage, so she could attend a ball. She meets Paul, losses her slipper, and in the end, Paul and Cendrillon get married.
I would read this Caribbean fairy tale, and compare and contrast it with the traditional Cinderella by making a Venn diagram of how they are alike and different. Then I would ask the students to think of their favorite fairy tale, and write a new version of that fairy tale.
