Pete & Pickles by: Berkeley Breathed (fantasy)

In the book Pete & Pickles, Pete is a pig who is ordinary and predictable. He doesn't like to do anything out of his normal routine. One night Pickles, who is an elephant that is performing in a circus down the road, sneaks into Pete's house during a storm. The next day a clown comes to take him back to the circus. Pete sees the circus tent from his window, and helps Pickles escape. From that moment, Pete and Pickles become best friends, and their friendship is tested when Pete's house fills up with water, and both of them almost drown.

I would read this book in the beginning of school to ensure that all students feel welcomed, and that they realize that friendships are important, and being friends with their classmates are important. I would then discuss with the class ways that they could be a good friend to others around them, and I would write this list on a sheet of chart paper and hang it in the classroom.
