A Day’s Work by: Eve Bunting (multicultural literature)

Francisco’s grandfather comes to America to live with Francisco and his mother after his father passes away. Since is abuelo (grandfather) doesn’t speak English, Francisco must go with his abuelo to find work. A man is looking for a gardener to pull weeds, and consequently Francisco lies about his grandfather being a gardener to get work. In the end, Francisco learns a lot of valuable lessons from his abuelo.

After reading this book to the class, I would tell them to write about an incident where they learned a valuable lesson. I would then have the students get into small groups and share their valuable lessons. Then I would tell each group to make a web of all the valuable lessons they learned as a group.
