Mr. Lincoln is a principal at a school where different cultures are celebrated. All his students love him but one – Eugene. He didn’t like people who were different than him, and he didn’t like Mr. Lincoln because he was African American. In order to open Eugene’s eyes to different cultures and people, he assigns Eugene a project in something that he’s interested in – birds. Through this experience, Eugene becomes more excepting of others.
After reading this book to the class, I would have the class discuss ways in which others are different. Then we would discuss how the students in our class are alike and different. Then I would partner the students up, and they could talk about themselves and what makes them different to their partner. Then each partner would write about the others exceptionalities.
